Loving the Mueller Neighborhood in Austin, Texas

Mueller Neighborhood in Austin, Texas

Mueller has been my home since 2008. I’ve met the best of life-long friends, had SO much fun, and even met my husband here (after meeting our sister-in-law in book club!). Block parties and pot luck dinners are usually plentiful. But today, in the age of COVID-19 and social distancing, things are just kind of weird.

The Mayor of Austin, Steve Adler, recently declared a stay-at-home order for all Austinites. We really shouldn’t leave our homes unless we need groceries, need to go to work (if we can’t work at home), or if we need to tend to someone who needs medical care. Times are bizarre. But Muellerites come through, every time.

Our neighbor, Ben Kramer, decided to arrange a nightly “dance party” throughout the neighborhood to keep folks in good spirits. Everyone was already home, so why not all turn on the same radio station and get to dancing? At 7:30 pm, families would join in and get to movin’. Everyone kept a healthy distance between family units, way more than the 6 feet recommended.

You can even catch a rare glimpse of my brother-in-law, playing guitar and donning a smile.

Even during these strange times, we can all remember to treat each other with kindness and grace. And the best thing about being home? Also having great neighbors to keep spirits up or deliver that much-needed roll of toilet paper. We’ll get through this, together.
