Mueller and the Alamo Drafthouse – together at last
Mueller’s town center will finally be on the map as Alamo Drafthouse today announced that they would be opening a new location there on Aldrich Street in 2016.
The Austin movie favorite will have 6 screens and comfortable 26″ wide seating for 600 people. Their closest existing neighbor The Thinkery is regularly festooned with families as the newly rebadged Children’s Museum moved to Mueller just over a year ago.
If you’re not familiar with the movie chain, I would describe them as a quirky bunch catering not just to blockbuster releases, but also to independent and foreign films, cult classics and less mainstream affairs.
They serve food at your seat via a gang of waiter-ninjas who bustle around with comfort food and more healthy offerings, in addition to adult beverages. They often tie in the menu with the movie, and I’ve seen car-eating, fire-breathing mechanical dinosaur displays in their parking lot before a showing of Transformers. So a little bit different from the nearby Galaxy Highland.
Alamo Drafthouse are branching out to cater for the under-18 crowd at their new location to integrate with the locale and its legion of children. This will impact the broader Central Austin area, since typically family programs are only shown down South on Slaughter or way North at Lakeline in Cedar Park.
The Town Center is still a long way from completion – there are plans for a hotel and an array of eating and entertainment options, and announcements of tenants thin on the ground. Right now we have the multi-story parking lot in place and the Thinkery, and a whole lot of empty space.
Just as the announcement of HEB as the anchor tenant for the Market District brought along everyone else from Torchy’s Tacos to a second Starbucks, I’m sure the unveiling of the Alamo will bring on the next wave of announcements for the Town Center.
